Fear, consequence, and what happens after.
A frightening home intrusion became public because contemporaneous reporting documented it. The useful part of the story is what happened, what followed and how fear can distort or clarify later judgment.

The story predates Randall’s City Council service. The story predates Randall Stone’s City Council service. It shows an early collision between personal safety, criminal conduct, accountability, empathy and the question of what happens to a person after the immediate crisis ends.
CN&R reporter Vic Cantu published the piece on August 11, 2011 under the headline “Close encounter” and the subhead “Chico couple want to help intruder who terrified them.” The source should be read directly rather than flattened into a heroic summary.
