Randall Stone with the late Jim Walker at a 2012 campaign fundraiser at former Councilmember Tom Nickell’s home. Walker, then Chico’s outgoing Vice Mayor, had served on the Chico Area Recreation and Park District board and the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission. Professionally, Walker was a family nurse practitioner and PA-C. He was also a competitive triathlete; Stone recalls competing as a youngster in the same 1984 Rancho Seco triathlon that Walker, then in college, won. Walker publicly endorsed Stone’s first City Council campaign and died of brain cancer in 2022.

Race sheets are becoming biography again.

A working athletic archive now links recovered records from childhood swimming, Bay Area running, St. Francis cross-country and track, Vineman, World Triathlon and the 1993 circuit, while separately tracking retained plaques, certificates and other physical objects that are awaiting scans.

Why separate it?

The general archive is already broad. The race ledger needs dates, exact recorded names, times, source links and uncertainty notes without turning the rest of the site into a spreadsheet wearing a necktie.

Several race awards are still doing their original job: surviving.

The athletics archive now records original artifacts still in the personal collection: the 1989 Chicago Sun-Times first-place award, 1992 Carlsbad first-place award, 1992 USTS Las Vegas division-winning plaque, 1993 Tri-Fed All-American certificate, and the considerably less majestic 1989 Tandem Up & Running third-place foot-massage roller.

Magazine material

Triathlete no. 113, corresponding to August 1993 in the surviving archive sequence, is the leading target for the remembered featured-amateur coverage. UMass Boston holds the physical issue.
