Pomo Swim Beach / Lake Mendocino
First-choice swimming day when current water-quality, weather and access conditions are acceptable.
Team Stone / Travel / Guides / Fort Bragg & Westport
A repeat-trip field guide revised after the trip: road decisions, water reality, family pacing, harbor backups, coast safety, communications, and what we would do differently next time.
What survived contact with reality
The biggest correction from the pre-trip punch list is simple: North Coast water is cold, powerful and condition-dependent. For a family swimming day, the inland options deserve first priority. The Pacific is where Team Stone applies go/no-go judgment rather than optimism.
First-choice swimming day when current water-quality, weather and access conditions are acceptable.
Call ahead. Treat private/day-use access as something to verify, not an assumption inherited from an old guide.
Never improvise a swim stop without current bacterial and harmful-algal-bloom checks. A pretty shoreline is not a water-quality report.
Russian Gulch can be spectacular and still be a poor swim plan: very cold water, surge and rogue-wave exposure, and no assumption of continuous lifeguard coverage. Van Damme is a more structured location for supervised paddling or diving when conditions permit. Westport-Union Landing remains a surf-and-scenery destination, with water around the low-50s Fahrenheit and enough surge to make casual swimming a bad default.

Road west
Check Caltrans QuickMap and county closures before committing to the final leg. Fuel, food and restroom needs should be handled in Laytonville before Branscomb Road rather than becoming a family experiment on the mountain.
Use obvious legal pullouts only. Fog, rain, debris, wildlife and road condition can change the useful speed and sight distance quickly. Offline maps and communications references still belong in the vehicle.
Family rhythm
Leave a camp-and-water day unprogrammed. Reserve the things that punish spontaneity, such as railbikes or a specific Westport dinner, and keep a rain-backup circuit that can absorb a weather turn without making the day feel lost.
Noyo Center plus Princess Seafood or Casa del Sol is an easy weather-resistant sequence when the coast is being the coast.
PFDs, water shoes, warm layers and dry bags earn their space even when the intended activity sounds modest.
Hotel pool access, public-pool hours, venue hours, tides, wind, surf, water quality and road closures can all invalidate a beautiful plan assembled three months earlier.
Communications
Phones, amateur radio, APRS, Winlink, offline references, chargers and simple operating cards form overlapping layers. The guide does not pretend every layer works everywhere, which is rather the point of having more than one.
