D-STAR
D-STAR uses reflector and module logic that should not be confused with DMR talkgroups. Verify the connector, module and local audio path before blaming the radio.
Reflectors get easier once the nouns stop moving around.
What it is
D-STAR is an open digital amateur-radio protocol established by JARL. Internet gateways can route digital voice through repeaters and other D-STAR infrastructure.
Where it fits at K6RCS
D-STAR is part of the broader K6RCS digital-network literacy layer even when the current physical-radio workflow may reach it through software or gateway systems rather than a dedicated D-STAR radio.
Identity and addressing

Setup order
- Register/verify the callsign where the intended gateway system requires it.
- Program the local repeater and correct module deliberately.
- Test local repeater access before adding reflector or gateway routing.
- Use one known reflector/module as the first Internet test and confirm unlink behavior.
Common failure modes
- Padding/callsign-field formatting errors.
- Confusing repeater module letters with reflector modules.
- Leaving a reflector linked after the intended QSO or test.
- Assuming a hotspot-generated D-STAR path behaves exactly like a local repeater gateway.
Security and privacy
Do not publish passwords, API keys, device UIDs, hotspot security values, local IP addresses, management URLs, or detailed behavioral schedules. Keep backups of known-good codeplugs/configurations, use unique credentials, and document firmware/software versions before changing them.
