The years between the medal and the résumé.
In August 1993, I was on Team USA in Manchester. By October 1, I was on my own. The years that followed were not a neat transition into adulthood so much as an accelerated course in building one.
August to October 1993
Six weeks between two very different kinds of independence.
Triathlon had already taken me from childhood races to national and international competition. I represented Team USA in 1992 and 1993, won the United States Triathlon Series national championship in 1992, earned All-American recognition in 1993, and was part of the U.S. team that won team gold at the 1993 Triathlon World Championships in Manchester, England.
On paper, August 1993 looked like a culmination. Life did not cooperate with the narrative.
Within weeks, family housing and support ended abruptly. I had roughly two weeks to arrange a place to live and a way to support myself. In my recollection there was no precipitating misconduct behind the decision; the line was age. By October 1, 1993, I was on my own financially and practically, and I have supported myself since.
This is a personal account rather than a claim about anyone else’s motives. It belongs here because the abrupt break explains the years that followed better than a tidy list of degrees and titles does.
Foothill College
Twenty-eight quarter units, a full-time job, training, and rent.
Independence turned school into a logistics problem as much as an academic one. At Foothill College, I carried 28 quarter units of transferable coursework, made the Dean’s List, trained as an athlete, worked full time, and lived on my own.
The point is not that overloading a schedule is inherently virtuous. It is that there was no parental safety net underneath the experiment. Time, money, transportation, food, coursework and training had to reconcile every week because nobody else was going to reconcile them for me.
Phi Theta Kappa and later Golden Key belong in the same academic thread. They are not substitutes for the degrees that came later; they are evidence that the academic work was already serious while the rest of life was unusually crowded.

Sigma Chi
One of the institutions I chose, and kept.
I pledged Sigma Chi at the Beta Pi Chapter at Oregon State University in September 1994 and was initiated in April 1995. I later affiliated with Kappa Theta at Chico State.
At Kappa Theta I served in fraternity risk management and, around 1996, chaired Derby Days. The exact Derby Days term remains an archival date to pin down rather than something the site will manufacture from memory.
I am a Life Loyal Sig. That designation matters to me enough that it should not be buried in a miscellaneous-memberships list. Sigma Chi became one of the durable institutions I deliberately chose during a period when family support had ended abruptly. Friendship, responsibility, chosen community and continuity were practical things in those years, not résumé ornaments.
That is why the fraternity belongs in the biography. Not because Greek letters make a résumé shinier, but because friendship, responsibility, chosen community and continuity became practical things during those years.
On my own
After roughly two weeks’ notice to leave the family home, full financial and practical independence became the new baseline.
Foothill College
Dean’s List, 28 quarter units of transferable coursework, full-time employment and continued athletic training while living independently.
Beta Pi pledge
Pledged Sigma Chi at Oregon State University.
Initiation
Initiated into Sigma Chi at Beta Pi.
Kappa Theta
Affiliated at Chico State; fraternity risk-management service and Derby Days chairmanship, with the exact Derby Days year still flagged for archive confirmation.
Life Loyal Sig
The fraternity remains a living affiliation rather than a line from college that expired at graduation.
